Burmese cats were revered in their historical homeland - Burma - they were considered to be sacred animals 500 years ago. It was the temple cat which was looked after by the monks. It was believed that the better the monk cared for his favorite cat, the closer he was to God.

In the 1930s, the Burmese cat named Wong Mau was brought to America and crossed with a Siamese seal point. But only the great-grandchildren of Wong Mau were the pedigree line of Burmese. Later feline offspring got to England, and the breed has spread throughout the European continent.
